Bringing New Creation

2 Corinthians 5:16—6:2

The community work team was rehabbing a playground in a depressed area of town. It was a mess. Weeds in the play area. Missing swings on the swing set and missing bases on the softball field. Today, that would change. A fresh coat of paint on the fence and the slide. New seats and hardware on the seesaw. New shingles and decking on the gazebo.

Charlotte went to the hardware store to buy a few more buckets of paint. The man at the counter asked what she was working on. “We’re fixing up the playground at Country Squire Lakes.” The man shook his head. “What a waste of money. In a couple of weeks, it will be torn up again, and your work will be for nothing.”

He wasn’t the first to suggest that the work could be for naught. “Maybe you’re right,” she said. “But what if you’re wrong?”

As followers of Jesus, we believe that there is a new creation breaking into our world by the power of the Holy Spirit. As we share the good news, by word and deed, we join the work of the Lord bringing new life where there once was despair.
