Cause and Effect

April 13th, 2024

1 John 4:14-21

From a young age, children discover the power of cause and effect. A child’s cry beckons their mother to come quickly, touching a hot surface leads to discomfort, and hard work reaps success. One thing always leads to another.

It is only natural that our Heavenly Father would teach us to love by first loving us. God loves us the way that He would like for us to love others: unconditionally and with lots of grace. It is His hope that by loving us in such a way, we would love someone else in the same manner. Then, that person goes on to love someone else, and that person loves yet another. I imagine that it would be like a trail of carefully lined-up dominoes poised for that moment when they are gently tapped and then cascade into a beautiful, yet satisfying display.

“We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). This is part of the reason our Savior came to earth and lived among us. Consider asking God for ways to help initiate the domino effect of His great love today.
