Obedient Hearts

April 14th, 2024

1 John 5:1-6

Each day in Andrea’s classroom, they have what is affectionately called, “Lil’ Staff Meeting” (circle time). One of their daily rituals is go through a list of reminders. They make sure their “listening ears” are in good working order and to have “obedient hearts.” Andrea absolutely loves the way one of my petite friends says, “obedient hearts.” She speaks the words and puts both of her little hands over her heart with such sincerity. She already has a sense of the connection between love and obedience.

Ideally, Christ-followers obey God’s commands because of their love for their Creator. God doesn’t want us to feel “forced” to do the things He asks of us. He wants us to comply because He asked us to do so and we love Him.

Obedience isn’t always easy, and the particular path God asks us to follow might not be our first choice. However, God is patient, and He keeps asking, hoping that we will say “Yes” to Him out of love that flows from our obedient hearts.
