Humble Yourself

August 14th, 2023

Titus 3:1-8

Titus 3 reminds us of God’s great mercy and of how generous God has been to us. God is not generous because we deserve it but because He is kind and loving, demonstrating this to us through His son Jesus Christ. Paul instructed believers to be ready to do good. We can avoid controversy if we practice goodness, do not slander, practice peace, and are humble toward others. The passage reminds me of dark days in my life–the times of failure. However, it does not stop there.

The chiefs of the Cheyenne tribal bands were expected to live humbly. It seems the opposite of what might be expected of someone selected for such a position, seeing the examples of many power-hungry rulers over the centuries. I knew the last chief before the modern tribal governance was adopted, but did not know that he was a chief until he passed on and I read about him. The chiefs were to oversee through the input of their people, a way of governing that didn’t necessitate advertising their position.

Keep Jesus first. Humble yourself before Him.
