Beware of How You Teach

August 13th, 2023

James 3:1-6

The most dangerous weapon in the world is not made of metal, fired from guns, or delivered by rockets. The tongue inflicts the most damage above all other weapons. The bruises and scars cannot always be seen but the wounds remain long after the harsh words are spoken. Proverbs 15:4 says, “The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.”

The primary instrument of delivering good news can also be the source for the very opposite. The teacher knows the power of words, and learns to respect their use. The calling to teach others the goodness of the Christian life must be led by the Holy Spirit.

Learning is not just an intellectual task but also an emotional one. The attitude of teachers is as important as their aptitudes for their subjects. When teaching the truth of God faithfully, the best teachers of the gospel know the power of their own tongue and submit themselves before the presence of the Holy Spirit before they ever speak a word.
