1 John 2:15-25

I remember taking the vacation of a lifetime with my family as a teenager. We spent two weeks living an “old west” life: staying on a dude ranch, panning for gold, canoeing, cooking dinner over a fire pit, and riding horses. It was such a fun and memorable time. I was so caught up in it that I was considering the purchase of boots and a hat. When I arrived back home, I was relieved that I had not spent my money in that way. This was not because I changed my mind about liking the boots and hat and the world they represented, but because I was not part of that world and they would have been ill-fitting in the world where I did live.

It’s easy to get caught up in the attractions around us so that they take us in. We want to try them on. Remaining in Christ necessitates that we keep our true home and identity always before us, especially since our stay here on earth is extended. The Scriptures, the Church, the voice of God in creation all help keep our hearts and minds fixed on our true self in Christ.
