Give of Your Best in Worship

Mark 14:1-9
I loved looking down the table at our church potluck and seeing everyone’s famous dishes. The best of everything.
The woman that enters Simon’s house brings Jesus her most precious offering. She has been saving the perfume for her own burial and has to honor Jesus. She is compelled not just to give Him the nard but to pour it on His head so that the entire assembly is aware of her offering. She breaks the jar so that the offering is permanent. The disciples question the extravagance and Jesus explains that her best is the perfect gift.
We sometimes enter a worship service asking the question “What will I receive today?” True worship occurs when we bring our best dish and place it on the table along with everyone else’s best offerings. Then we experience the mixture of sacrifice and peace that comes with true humility. We break open our jars and as the fragrance fills the room, we know that we have bowed down before Jesus.
