His Presence Evokes Worship
December 22nd, 2021
Matthew 17:1-9
Peter, James, and John follow Jesus up the mountain, Jesus becomes dazzling white, and Moses and Elijah join Him. Then they hear the voice of God: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5b). Those words cause the disciples to fall prostrate in fear. In the presence of God, we have to worship with our entire selves.
Incredibly, it is not the presence of Moses and Elijah or Jesus’ transfiguration that impacts the disciples as much as God’s words. Jesus is beloved, and God implores the disciples to listen. The disciples must have been forever changed after this mountaintop encounter with the living God.
God’s presence should radically change us. Not only do we get the opportunity to worship the living God with our entire selves but we can listen to what God is telling us. As we step towards the manger this season we need to ask, “What do I need to hear from God today?”
