Acts 4:32-37.

The unity of the early church amazes me. The Greek word for “one” used here in Acts is heis and it denotes more than a number. It means to live, act, decide, and work in oneness—with unity, harmony, and agreement.

When was the last time you were in a group of people, and everyone wanted the same thing? The more people you bring in, the more opinions you encounter. The more opinions you encounter, the more opposition you receive. The unity that you hoped for disappears into a complex mishmash of privilege and attitude.

The early church had none of that. I imagine small discussions: “What do you want for dinner?” “Oh, whatever you want is great!” I imagine large discussions: “How shall we share the good news?” “Let’s go door to door.” “Yes!” “Let’s hold meetings.” “Yes!” “Let’s go to the town square and tell everyone.” “Yes!”

The only way to live in oneness with others is to put aside everything (opinions, privileges, rights) except for one thing—in this case, following Christ and doing His will. When nothing else matters, there will be unity.

May it be so in all our churches today.
