A Child of the Kind

Titus 3:1-8

First-century Greek did not have boldface or italic fonts to emphasize certain words or points. They couldn’t change color or make the font larger to get their readers’ attention. Instead, they used repetition. When a New Testament passage repeats something, it’s nearly always doing it for emphasis.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! (v. 1, emphasis added). So many times we allow other, sometimes unhealthy things to tell us who we are. We let our own self-talk tell us we are failures—worthless, abandoned, and alone. We let our feelings, which can change on a whim, tell us who or what we are.

Enter John, who jumps into the fray, reminds us who we are, and then repeats it for emphasis: We are beloved children of God. Do you want to know who you really are outside of all the chaos and negativity that tries to define you? The Bible says you’re a child of God. Now go and live like it.
