Lesson In Fractions

1 Corinthians 12:21-31

In 1 Corinthians 12:21-31, it becomes apparent that Paul repeats the word “part” over and over again. A quick flashback to elementary school fractions reminds us of how important each part is to understanding the whole number. There cannot be a whole number without the parts that go into it.

In verse 27, Paul speaks with an affirmative tone when he says that they are the body of Christ, and they are a part of it. This isn’t an “either/or.” This is a “both/and” scenario. We are a part and we are the whole. The body of Christ needs all of its parts to be a full, functioning whole.

Some of us may find ourselves in fractured or struggling churches. Perhaps it is the age-old battle between young and old or financial priorities. The list could go on. Anyone who has tried to glue together a broken glass knows that each shard is important to putting that object back together. Each part is needed and necessary for the function of the whole. So it is with the church.
