A Virtue and Direction

February 24th, 2024

1 Peter 5:1-11

Humility is not only about refraining from boasting about ourselves and our accomplishments. Humility also expresses itself through godly submission to others. The apostle Peter urges his fellow elders to lovingly watch over those under their care, humbly and willingly, serving as examples to the flock. In the same way, younger believers are to submit to their elders. We are to clothe ourselves with humility toward one another.

In other words, humility is both a virtue and an orientation, an affirmation of our mutual dependence on one another and the gifts we each bring to the community of faith. Humble people are teachable, and as a result are often wise. They do not seek recognition for themselves. They are patient and kind, quick to listen, and slow to speak. They are not anxious, because they have learned to trust in God and to lean on others for counsel and assistance.

It is no wonder then, that God shows favor to the humble, for through them, God is able to bring about the peace and healing our world so desperately needs.
