Call To Repentance

February 21st, 2024

Romans 2:1-11

Salvation is a free gift from God; we are saved by grace, not by our own works, so that no one of us may boast of our own righteousness (Ephesians 2:8-9). Yet, our good deeds are not without value or meaning. Indeed, we were “created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (v. 10). When we persist in doing good, we bring glory to God and reveal ourselves to be true children of God and disciples of Jesus.

Too often, those who are the most vocal about pointing out others’ transgressions are harboring secret sins of their own. Jesus reserved some of His harshest criticism for religious hypocrites. When we persist in evil, we “show contempt for the riches of [God’s] kindness, forbearance and patience” (Romans 2:4). God’s grace is not a license to sin, but rather a call to repentance.

Lord, help us not to sow condemnation, but rather to sow goodness, so that we might reflect your patient, generous lovingkindness to those who have yet to believe.
