Walking With God

January 22nd, 2024

Luke 13:1-9

Bad things happen to good people. There: I said it. One of the common myths among Jesus’ disciples was that if something bad happened to a person, they must have done something to deserve it. Sickness, blindness, lameness, or tragedy was assumed to be the wrath of an angry God against sinners who evidently deserved it more than others who were healthy and whole. The idea was bad things happened . . . to bad people. The underlying thought was that God causes everything to happen, so if something bad happened, there must be a reason why.

The same mistake is made countless times in our world. Something terrible happens, and folks naturally go looking for a reason why. “God needed that baby in heaven more than we needed her here.” “Everything happens for a reason.”

The fact is, we all stand in need of repentance. When disaster strikes, it’s not God’s judgment. Bad things happen to good people. It rains on the just and the unjust. The critical difference is whether or not we are walking with God when the bad things happen.
