Inside Out
January 9th, 2024
Luke 11:33-36
Miranda has been fortunate enough to avoid needing to wear glasses or contacts. Her husband’s eyes, however, are a different story. Once she almost had to lead him by the hand through a crowded airport after an unexpected overnight stay.
Today we understand that sight occurs when our eyes respond to light in the world around us. In ancient times, it was believed that light was actually emitted from the eye, making sight possible.
As Jesus preached about the health of our eyes, He wasn’t talking about whether or not we need contacts to see clearly. Instead, He was using His listeners’ understanding of sight to communicate a profound truth: The inside shapes the outside, not the other way around. We can appear clean, beautiful, and righteous on the outside and yet be filled with hypocrisy and sin (Matthew 23:25-28). A transformed heart filled with God’s light will not only overflow into our actions, but it will give us a godly lens through which to see the world.
