The Greatest Sign

Luke 11:29-32

Jonah was not exactly enthusiastic about preaching a message of repentance in Nineveh. Only after foolishly running in the opposite direction did he finally fulfill his calling. The response created quite a scene: a non-Jewish kingdom mourning and turning from its sinful ways at the leading of its king. Such transformation was possible among an unlikely people despite Jonah’s bitter attitude and disapproval of God’s limitless mercy.

Now one greater than Jonah had come, one whose heart is filled with compassion and whose mercy has no end. Jesus’ message to the crowd was simple: If Jonah’s half-hearted delivery of God’s message was enough to turn the hearts of sinful Ninevites and save them from destruction, isn’t the very Word of God himself enough for you?

Jesus knew that no amount of mind-blowing miracles could guarantee belief and obedience from the crowd (Luke 10:13-16). They needed to listen closely to Jesus’ every word, repent, and do what He said.

Are you living like that today?
