Joy To The World!
December 21st, 2023
Luke 2:34-40
We have heard from the angel. We have heard the great news of Jesus’ birth from shepherds. We have heard the angel choirs announce the entrance of this heavenly, humble King. What we may not realize is the extent to which these proclamations take place as the good news of Christ’s birth is shared.
The prophet Anna takes her place in the birth story of Jesus, but perhaps she foreshadows His death as well. We should not miss the fact that Anna spoke about the child at His birth; women were present at the cross as witnesses of His death, and women were sent out from the garden to proclaim His resurrection. In each important phase of the Christ story, women were given the important role of witness and proclamation.
In these quiet and hushed moments before Christmas, as the birthing pains begin, let us take a moment to exhale in thanks for the women in the story and for a Christ who chose to invite their voices. The absolute joy of this season is the very fact that the offer to see and accept salvation is for everyone.
