True Preparedness

November 30th, 2023

Luke 1:18-25

May 22, 2011, began and ended like every day before it. For Christian radio broadcaster Harold Camping and his followers, such normality meant that they had placed all their eggs in the wrong basket. Harold’s confident prediction that the day of judgment would take place on the 21st had proved false.

For thousands of years, self-proclaimed “prophets” have attempted to crack a non-existent code to narrow in on the day Christ would return or at least to identify the signs that such a day was near. If we would take Jesus’ words seriously, however, we would discover that such endeavors are a waste of our precious time (v. 36).

Believers are commanded to keep watch and prepare for Christ’s return. Such preparedness has nothing to do with pinpointing the exact moment this will happen and has everything to do with how we’re living when it does. We are called to be ready. This readiness isn’t marked by frantic, fear-based calculations, but by holy, sermon-on-the-mount living. It is marked by day-in, day-out faithfulness.

The correct scripture for this devotional should be Matthew 24:36-44.

I used to listen to Harold Camping on the radio during long night drives. He made me so mad that I stayed awake.
The Bible is clear. Nobody knows.
