Can You See?

Ezekiel 47:1-6a
Several times in Scripture the Lord asks, “Can you see?” It nearly never refers to physical sight but almost always to spiritual insight. About 64% of the world’s population, 4 billion people, wear glasses to improve their vision. Exactly 0% of the world’s population in any biblical era wore glasses. Imagine how cool it would be to visit a crowd in old Jerusalem with a box of reading spectacles and then ask, “Can you see?”
There is no lens that can improve spiritual sight. Spiritual vision only improves by following Jesus. The closer we follow, the better we see.
A friend once stopped at a rather meager yard sale, just one table with very little on it. The seller, an elderly woman, thanked my friend who made no purchase. Later, my friend felt led to return and simply give some money to the seller. Tears flowed, hugs were shared, and the elderly woman said, “you will never know what you have done for me today.” My friend saw clearly that day!

Ezekiel was asked what he was seeing and experiencing. The author is making the point that we must see with spiritual eyes, guided by the Holy Spirit. There are many instances where people are asked, “What do you see?” (For example, Jeremiah 1:11.) We must open our eyes to see what God is showing us.
