Our Mark and Our Message

November 11th, 2023

2 Corinthians 5:11-21

In preparation to attend a global youth conference in the late 1990s, I was tasked with memorizing the latter half of 2 Corinthians 5. Many Christ followers love the language of verse 17; like a caterpillar breaking free from a dark cocoon as a beautiful butterfly, so in Christ we break from the darkness of sin and into citizenship in His kingdom.

I, too, genuinely love that verse and the imagery it brings to mind. Perhaps even more so, though, I love the verses that follow it. Those verses tell us that we have been given by Christ the ministry of reconciliation (v. 18). We are Christ’s ambassadors; we get to proclaim the message and be an envoy of hope!

Diplomats often wear a tiny flag representing the country they serve. As ambassadors for Christ, our mark is not a flag of any nation or even a tiny cross around our neck or on our lapel, our mark is the Holy Spirit. Yes, our mark is the Holy Spirit and our message is “be reconciled to God” (v. 20).
