Hear The Word of the Lord

October 5th, 2023

2 Chronicles 34:26-33

Most Christians place a high value on the Scriptures. It’s God’s holy word; it’s the authority of our lives, the rule of faith. Yet, in many churches isn’t it strange that so little Scripture is read in the gathered assembly of the church’s worship?

King Josiah gathered the whole people of Jerusalem for worship. The priests and the Levites along with the whole city with the king gather for worship. Once they were all together this happened: “he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant that had been found in the house of the Lord” (2 Chronicles 34:30b, nrsv). We find a similar event in Nehemiah 8 where the people of Israel are gathered to hear the book of the law of Moses.

The proclamation of the Scriptures in the gathered people of God is what Christians have done since the early days of the Church. An interesting fact: the canon of Scripture was created to clearly identify which books could be read in the worship service!

May we grow in our desire to hear the word of the Lord proclaimed for everyone to hear.
