The Test of Faith
August 28th, 2023
2 Chronicles 20:1-9
Our first response to an approaching threat reveals a great deal about our character. King Asa “called to the Lord his God” and God gave him victory over the Cushites (14:11-12). Late in his reign, when threatened by Baasha, king of Israel, King Asa took the gold from the Lord’s temple and his royal treasury to hire the king of Syria to attack his enemy (16:2). This lack of faith led to a rebuke from the Lord and the curse of continued warfare (16:7-9).
Jehoshaphat’s heart, however, was “devoted to the ways of the Lord” (17:6). When faced with the combined forces of nations to the east “Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast” (20:3). Responding to Jehoshaphat’s leadership the people of Judah “came together to seek help from the Lord” (20:4). Jehoshaphat could pray with confidence that the Lord “will hear us and save us” (20:9).
When under threat what is our first response? This is a true test of faith.
