Correcting Our Priorities

July 17th, 2023

Amos 4:1-6

Amos 4 took place near present-day Golan Heights, an area fertile for raising cattle. These ancient ranch families were the elites of the day, affording them many luxuries. They were tithing faithfully and giving offerings. They had financial clout. Life seemed good. They partied with the right people, not with the “riffraff” begging in the streets.

When we become comfortable in our finances, our lifestyle can become one that forgets others. We feel deserving of privilege and forget those less fortunate. Jesus called this out: “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:23). He said to get rid of everything. Sell it all! Change the lives of the poor around you.

Are we living for the present and forgetting those around us, focusing on bettering our own lives? Do we see the neglected around us? Let God’s love go out into our communities in generosity.
