Deuteronomy 7:1-6
When the words of the Lord are twisted, people have beat down, enslaved, and committed genocide against fellow humans, contrary to the clear biblical commands to love God and to love each other. God’s people are to focus on being God’s people and nothing else.
When the chosen people of God encountered stronger nations, they would be more likely to be changed by ungodly beliefs and practices of the dominant culture. The story of God’s covenant, which they carried with them into new lands, could easily be wiped out over time. They had the covenant of God but not yet the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit in their hearts.
The people of promise, then and now, tend to forget what God has done for them and expected from them when they are enveloped by the flashy allure and transient rewards of worldly influences. The longer they lingered there, the people of God were less likely to recognize God’s presence and remember their calling to be only His.
