God Sees The Heart
January 17th, 2023
1 Samuel 16:6-13
I pulled an old favorite book from my shelf and recommended it to my daughter. She wasn’t interested. A few months later we visited a nice bookstore where she picked up a copy of the same book with great enthusiasm. The only difference was a new modern design on the cover. I laughed when I told her it was the same story she had turned down from my collection. The old saying is true: you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
The same wisdom is true for judging people. It is easy for our opinion of a person to be influenced by their outward appearance. Our feelings about people often are shaped by culture, preferences, upbringing, and experiences. It is easy to make judgments about people based on their outward appearance. What is much more difficult is looking past the exterior and discovering the true motivations of their heart.
The Lord directed Samuel to anoint David, the youngest son in Jesse’s family, to be king. He appeared to be the least likely of all eight sons for this mission. However, the Lord chose him not for his outward appearance, but for the appearance of his heart.
