Set Your Heart to the End

Psalm 119:105-112

My mom took me to the roller skating rink as a young child. She recounts the story of me falling and getting up, falling and getting up, falling and getting up. I was determined to learn how to roller skate that day. I’ve been told that I have a strong determination, which I guess is a good thing.

In Psalm 119:112 the Psalmist declares that his heart is set on keeping God’s decrees even to the very end. He indicates that his heart, or his inner will, is bent and determined to perform God’s decrees. He finds delight and joy in God’s decrees simply because they exist. The Psalmist has discovered that even when distractions come along or when enemies attempt to derail him, God’s decrees provide life and joy.

When we set our heart on following God, even in the most difficult of circumstances, we find joy. When we determine to hold fiercely to the promises of God we find delight. When we meditate day and night on the words of God, they provide a light for our path in turn bringing joy to our heart.
