The Beauty of God’s Word
January 2nd, 2023
2 Timothy 3:10-17
I once witnessed a baby dedication in which the pastor gifted a pristinely white, gold edged children’s Bible. It was a work of art that one puts away to preserve. The pastor challenged the parents to do the opposite. He said, “Let your baby girl play with the Bible, let her drool on it and cut teeth on it. Let her sticky fingers grip the pages, so that the Word of God becomes like a familiar and favorite friend.
Paul reminds Timothy that scripture has been part of his narrative since infancy. Psalm 119:11 instructs us to hide scripture in our hearts. Proverbs 22:6 assures parents. Deuteronomy 6:5-9 is a snapshot of how our ancestors valued scripture. God’s Word is a living, functioning, life-giving gift to us. Like a well-read book, it grows in value as time and generations embrace it and absorb life from it.
In this new year, may this old Friend become a source of new life that roots you deeply.
