Colossians 3:12-17

Have you ever put on a pair of pants that’s a size or two smaller than what you should be wearing? Yikes! When we wear clothing that doesn’t fit, we don’t look right at all.

That’s why Paul uses the metaphor of clothing when he talks about how the people of God should begin to act. As people who are holy and loved by God, Paul instructs us to “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (v. 12b). In other words, church, wear clothes that fit! As God’s beloved people, we should be acting in ways that fit the very character of the God we worship.

Too often, the people of God are content to “wear clothing” (behave in ways) that are too small for us. Letting ourselves act without compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience is not befitting the people of God.

So let’s allow Jesus’s message to dwell deep in our being as we teach one another how to wear clothes that fit—not as fashion police, but as people who know and are growing in the very nature of God!
