Stand Firm In Hope

Colossians 1:15-23

The story is told of Thermopylae where the Persians, the most powerful army at the time (480 CE) were attacking Greece when it was not yet the great empire known in history. By all odds the Greeks were doomed. The Greeks fought bravely and were winning until a traitor betrayed the Greek advantage. As the last Greek warriors were about to die, they sent a message home, “Tell them we behaved as they would wish us to and are buried here.” That message so inspired the Greeks that they defeated the Persian army and began their rise to become a great empire.

Can followers of Christ say the same, “Tell the Lord we have behaved as He would wish us to and are buried here.” Believers are to stand firm against the culture around us seeking to damage the Christian faith. Are our lives as believers so bound to God’s word and to the gospel that we behave as He would wish us to behave? May we not be cowards in our faith or slack in our behavior, as if we know nothing of Calvary and how to take up our cross and follow the example of our Lord.

The July 15th devotional is stirring, challenging, and inspiring! Thank you for it. And, not wanting to “be cowards in our faith or slack in our behavior,” as she says, I wish to suggest that “(480 CE)” should have been written “(480 AD).” As Christians, shouldn’t we take a stand to continue using Anno Domini (In the year of the Lord) instead of capitulating to the Common Era concept that much of the world is using to remove the Lord from our society? Just a thought.
