1 Thessalonians 3:1-8

There is so much profound wisdom about the work of mentoring and discipling in 1 Thessalonians 3. First, the Apostle Paul prepared them for trials. He told them that they would come. Then, during the trials, he sent Timothy to check up on them. Finally, when the report was good, he praised them lavishly.

Mentoring is hard work, and there likely are not enough people in the church willing to do this hard work. We know trials are coming to people new and weak in the faith, but it takes time, energy, setback stamina, and strategy to be willing to walk with people through their growth.

Imagine the journey he had to take just to make sure they were maintaining their faith through trial. Modern road maps suggest the journey from Athens to Thessaloniki is just under 500km (310 miles), one way.

Are we willing to match the passion to help our brothers and sisters through trials? How can we hope for growth of those newer in Christ without mentors with this much conviction and drive? May the Lord raise us up to be like Timothy!
