The Best of Both Worlds

Philippians 1:18-26
There have been people over the years who have shared how they want to get out of this world so they can be with Jesus. There is a frustration in them about having to stick around here on earth. Paul speaks into this tension in Philippians 1 to the Philippian church.
Paul was ready to get out of here, but he was fully prepared to be present here. His whole existence was centered on Jesus. Here he got to serve as Christ’s ambassador. There he gets to be with Christ in fullness.
I wonder if we do too much distinguishing between this life and the next. When we speak of eternal life, people often think of life that begins after we are done here. That isn’t the best way to look at it. Eternal life begins right now as we are transformed into the kind of people who are living with the next life in mind. Eternal life isn’t just a statement about time. It is also about quality, life in the fullest possible sense.
Paul understood something we need to understand. Whether here or there, now or then, it is all about Christ in us and through us.
