Psalm 118:1-7
Here, sandwiched between the shortest and the longest psalms, is Psalm 118, probably that of a king who expresses his gratitude to God not only for victory over his enemies but also for sparing his own life. “The Lord” or “Yahweh” is mentioned twenty-seven times in this psalm because He is the One who is Victor.
You and I may not face entire kingdoms as our enemies, but our opposition is still real. There are times when we may even feel alone. In such times we need to say with the psalmist, “The Lord is with me; he is my helper” (7). The Apostle Paul put it this way: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31b)
I recently faced the biggest obstacle of my life while on vacation: open heart surgery. It was during the pandemic when hospitals didn’t allow visitors, but I was never alone, for the Lord was with me. Through scripture and prayer, He provided His peace. I remember my first thought when I woke up in ICU, “Thank God, I’m alive!” No matter how things may look for you, there are so many reasons to praise Him.
