Repent and Believe

Psalm 135:15-21

The Israelites had sinned and God sent poisonous snakes into their camp as a result. The people repented and asked Moses to tell God to take the snakes away. The Lord instructed Moses to make a snake, put it on a pole, and lift it up. Anyone who looked at it would be saved.

This is a strange story for Jesus to mention to Nicodemus who is asking how to be born again, and even stranger for Jesus to relate to himself. However, the message in the story of Moses and the snake is that salvation is found through repentance, turning, and trusting what God has presented as the solution.

If God were interested in coming to condemn the world, Jesus would have been the snakes set upon the sinful Israelites. However, He is not the snake on the ground, biting at our heels, poisoning us to death. We are already suffering from the venom of death delivered as a result of our sin.

Jesus is the solution, lifted up, for all to see. We simply must repent and look to Him for salvation. What a gift, indeed!

The scripture reference for this devotional is incorrect and should be John 3:9-18.
