Psalm 112:1-10

Ambition, fame, possessions, security, health—these are but some of the goals human nature deems worthy to pursue. Our culture is shaped by the need to self-preserve; it is the survival of the fittest. Pride drives us to reach the top, at the expense of all others left on the bottom.

The people of God are called to live counter-culturally. Our priority is to pursue the well-being of others. Our goal is shalom for all.

Psalm 112 describes well the worthy aspirations of one who fears the Lord. We are to be gracious, compassionate, and righteous. We are to be generous, lend freely, and conduct our affairs with justice. We are to trust in the Lord and freely give gifts to the poor.

The psalmist is revealing the secret of a blessed life. As we prayerfully discern our hearts, may the Lord expose in us the ways we pursue worldly desires over heavenly purposes. May we be reminded to seek God’s kingdom first and trust that everything else will be added to us.
