God’s Broken Heart
September 20th, 2021
Genesis 6:1-8
One of the things I remember well about my childhood was an illustrated Bible storybook. The images of God were all big and powerful. It was easy to think of God in strong and wrathful terms, especially when it came to stories of disobedience. Thus, it was interesting to see the lead-up to God preparing a flood to destroy the world He created.
The pain of seeing how God’s children were living evokes the strong sense of grief “that he had made human beings” (v. 6).
I can’t prove it, but I don’t think God really regretted breathing life into human beings. However, the feeling that these humans did not recognize how much He loved them broke God’s heart.
Maybe you can relate to seeing someone in whom you have personally invested time repeatedly ignore or rebuff your love and care for them. It hurts. We can feel this kind of pain because we were created in the image and likeness of God. We must always bear this in mind in our relationship with Him and with others.
