John 15:1-8
Jesus’s words to His disciples would have reminded them of the scriptures that taught them that Israel was the vine in which God planted (Psalm 80:8-9; Hosea 10:1). Israel was called to be a vine that would produce good fruit for God. However, they did not produce good fruit, but rather rotten grapes (Isaiah 5:1-2). Israel was not faithful to God’s calling. Israel was not a true representative of God to the world.
The gospel of John refers to Jesus not simply as the vine but more specifically as the true vine. The implication is that in contrast to Israel, which became unfaithful, Jesus remains faithful and thus fulfills Israel’s calling to be the vine of God.
Jesus is the true vine.
While we remain connected to the true vine, we will experience the faithfulness of God in the way that He loves us and provides for us. People may fail us and be unfaithful. Jesus, however, will never fail us. Remain in Jesus, the true vine who is always faithful and true.
