Acts 13:42-52

Charles rebelled against his parents. He did not want anything to do with their rules or their faith. They persisted in loving him and trying to guide him to follow Jesus. They let him live at home and were kind to him despite his many vindictive behaviors.

Charles would hide his cigarettes and filthy magazines in his dresser, but his mother would take them out and throw them away when he was sleeping off his hangovers. One day, Charles was angry and told his mother that what she did was very wrong. He finished by shouting hatefully to her, “Get off my back!”

The Holy Spirit helped his mother to calmly reply, “Charles, I am not on your back. I am on your side.” Charles often thought about that over the next six months and especially about the caring way that she had said it. In the end, he gave his heart and life to Jesus.

Thankfully, his father and mother had never given up on him. When it did not look like anything was happening, God was actually at work behind the scenes in Charles’ heart and mind. We must faithfully “keep calm and carry on.”
