Colossians 2:1-10

We live in a world that seems to love arguing! We want to be right, and we want to impress our peers with our superior debate skills. When it comes to our faith, this impulse to be impressive does not go away. Shelves of books have been written that instruct followers of Jesus in the ways of proving themselves to be correct in the face of naysayers.

This approach doesn’t seem to align with the goals of the gospel, though. Paul instructs the church of Colossae to build their identities upon a life devoted to the love of Jesus Christ, and to avoid arguments and philosophical debates. Followers of Jesus are to be so focused on the cross and the Lordship of Jesus that they have no time for arguments.

Conversations about why we believe the things that we do are vital and have their place. But Paul reminds the church not to let such dialogue distract us from the ultimate goal of being united in love. When we serve the Lord in this way, we can truly follow in His footsteps and give everything its proper priority.

This is a very timely article, seeing how we have just come through the impeachment hearings.
