1 Peter 1:1-12

Almost exactly a year ago, I was worshipping Jesus in a country that is unenthusiastic about that kind of spiritual activity. In front of me was a row of people wearing red lanyards and loving Jesus with all their hearts. The red lanyards indicated that no photographs should be taken in order to protect identities.

When we read the words of 1 Peter 1, we should hear them through the ears of the persecuted church. This is Peter encouraging a group of red-lanyard-people who will experience significant cost and even martyrdom for their faith in Christ. The specter of death is a constant consideration for this audience, and it is into that sobering reality that the apostle Peter speaks of new birth and living hope. It is the understanding that Christ died and conquered death.

Rejoice, as you celebrate the victory of new birth and living hope over death and be thankful for the gift of life. Take time today to pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ who face persecution.
