Proverbs 10:1-5

I watched my mother mourn the loss of her son. She still saw the little boy toddling around and getting into trouble. Even though he was an adult with grown children and a grandson, my mother saw only her son, her firstborn.

Proverbs 10 contrasts the difference between wisdom and foolishness. Wisdom is “good sense” while foolishness is the “lack of good sense.” This comparison is less about the relationship between the parent and child than it is about encouraging the reader to make good decisions. As human beings we are prone to taking risks and at times bad decisions can get us into trouble. In a spiritual sense when we take spiritual risks that lack good sense, it breaks the heart of God – just as it would break the heart of a godly mother trying to instill God’s principles in the lives of her children.

It is easy to forget that the consequences of foolish actions impact the people around us – especially our families. God wants us to remember that we have the Holy Spirit to guide us helping us to avoid decisions that lack common sense.
