Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Luke 6:39-40
The word “hypocrite” gets tossed around a lot these days. Most often, we use it for anyone who says one thing but does something different. Jesus used the word hypocrite in Luke 6:42. What exactly did He mean by the word? It is a word drawn from the world of the theater, and refers to one who pretends, acts, and wears a mask.
You’ve probably heard the phrase, “It’s not what you say but what you do that’s important.” While in one sense there is a truth here, for followers of Christ, both what we say and what we do matters. This is why Jesus asks the critical question, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I say?”. No matter how much we may praise God in our worship services, it is hypocrisy unless we are also obedient the other six days of the week.
Fortunately, there is hope. Not only is Jesus the one who enables us to not live as a hypocrite, He goes on to say that when our words and actions are in sync, we not only glorify Him, but we are able to then withstand the storms of life. What a promise!
