The Name Protects His Name
September 30th, 2020
Ezekiel 36:28-38
We tend to protect those things we most value. Security systems are installed in our cars and homes. Valuables are put in safes. We do our best to keep our loved ones safe from harm.
Similarly, God’s name and glory are valued by God. To find satisfaction in anything else would be to look below himself, and thus would be idolatry. God has concern for how His name is represented among the peoples of the earth. He was concerned because the Gentiles were supposed to learn about the true and living God by observing Israel’s righteous behavior. Instead, Israel’s unrighteous, corrupt, immoral behavior produced a false picture of God and profaned His name, dishonoring His character.
If God sees the need to protect His name because of its value, how much more should we? The Westminster Catechism states it well: “What is the chief end of man? Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.” Let’s live in such a way that our lives protect the name of God and give Him the glory He deserves.
