Choosing Sides

1 Peter 2:1-10
I recently watched a TV show where the typical choosing of teams was taking place. Team captains were selected, and one by one, they chose who would be on their side for the impending paintball battle. They whittled down the players until only one man remained. Even as he was the last one standing, he stood there with fingers crossed, hoping to be picked. “Pick me, pick me,” he whispered. His fear was not of being chosen last, but of not being chosen at all.
The Israelites were declared God’s chosen people from the beginning. They never had to fear not being chosen. One of the most beautiful things about the kingdom of God, is that we too are chosen. “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4). You and I, and every person we meet, are chosen by God. This is an incredible gift. We are chosen. With that gift comes great responsibility. We must choose God in return if we want to experience the fullness of the kingdom both now and for eternity.
