Hebrews 12:18-29

The Israelite people were terrified of God; even the thought of the voice of God made them tremble. They understood Mount Sinai as a sacred and holy space, and anyone who touched it faced eminent death. So, they lived fearfully, unsure what God would do in the face of their unrighteousness. Moses became their mouthpiece, and their fear helped keep them from sinning. It filled them with awe and reverence for the Almighty God.

God still comes with strength and power, seeking justice and weeding out unrighteousness, and is still deserving of our holy awe and reverence. However, we no longer approach the same Mount Sinai in search of God. Rather, when we come to God, we approach Mount Zion—the holy city—the heavenly Jerusalem. Here Jesus is our mediator, making a place for us in God’s very presence. But Jesus has made a way for us to approach God, even in our sinfulness, so that we may be cleansed by His purifying blood.
