Predator and Prey

Luke 4:1-13

A pod of orcas in the northeast Pacific, a pride of lions on the Serengeti, a Bengal tiger in Bangladesh, all are apex predators. Yet, even they do not just attack whatever prey they encounter. They look for the weak, the old, the young, or one separated from its group.

For the devil there was no higher prey than Jesus. The Son of God had committed himself to a human body, with all its needs, weaknesses, and limitations. Luke states that “for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry” (4:2). The devil was unrelenting in his pursuit. Jesus, however, was resolute. He used the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, in His defense (vv. 4, 8, 12; Ephesians 6:17).

Jesus had no “get out of temptation free” card. He used the same Word of God available to us. If the devil sees he isn’t going to win, he will leave until another “opportune time” (v. 13). So be prepared.

Interesting to read the Scripture references. Even Satan used the Word of God.
