Altars of Hope

Hebrews 6:13-20
Imagining someone waiting patiently, Abraham is not the first person to come to mind! His adventures in Genesis 12-18 describe the reality of humans struggling to keep faith. But Abraham did keep faith, and the author of Hebrews ties his waiting on God to hope which is an “anchor for the soul” (v.19).
In Hebrews 11, we’re told Abraham didn’t live to see all that was promised to him. This is part of hope’s purpose. It is the life-giving anticipation of that which has not yet come. Hope empowers the work of joy in our lives, even at times when there is no logical reason for joy to exist. How do we keep hope, and how do we find joy?
Genesis 12 and 13 reveal times when Abraham experienced God’s loving and faithful promises and marked them with an altar. This is how we keep hope and find joy. We look for places where we see God’s faithfulness, and we put a marker there. Where are those places in your life?
