John 20:1-18

I have two cousins who are adopted., They are so much a part of the family that it’s difficult to imagine otherwise. Many years ago, we were at a church gathering together, and seeing us side-by-side, one of my Sunday School teachers remarked, “Boy, you sure can tell you are related!” These days, when we see each other, we embrace and connect like the family we are. They have truly, wholly been adopted into the family.

One of the major implications for us in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus is the possibility for us to be adopted as God’s own children. The God and Father of Jesus can be our God and Father. It’s easy to overlook that very important piece of good news in the resurrection passage of John 20. When Jesus sends word to the disciples that His Father and God is their Father and God, that possibility is opened for us, too. We could be so wholly adopted into the life and family of God that it’s difficult to imagine otherwise.
