John 17:9-19

In Jesus’ farewell prayer, we see quite clearly those things for which He is most concerned. In John 17, Jesus calls out to the Father for the people with whom He has shared His life and who will carry on His mission in the world.

Throughout Scripture it is clear how God feels about His relationship with those who are faithful to Christ. They are sons and daughters of the King. They are the bride waiting for her groom. They can ask, seek, knock and the resources of heaven are available to them.

As partners with Jesus, as co-heirs with Christ, we find both solace and guidance in this petition of our Lord. He pleads on behalf of those who bear His name that the full resources of heaven be available to them. Even now, He stands at the right hand of the Father interceding for us (Romans 8:34). What strength and joy we have, knowing Jesus has prayed and is still asking on our behalf! May we also find His prayer the model by which we call out to God on behalf of the church.
