1 Peter 5:1-11

In the late 1970s the National Basketball Association was facing a public relations nightmare. Public perception was that the players were selfish and prone to fighting, both on and off the court. Since then league administrators have worked hard at creating a new image of athletes who genuinely care about their community. While not questioning the motivations of individual players and business personnel, we all know that the bottom-line for this type of “service” is one that increases ticket and merchandise sales.

Too often we do the same thing. Our motivation to serve others is really about self-service. We serve in the spotlight so others will notice just how much we care, how skilled we are, or to gain something in return.

We are called to treat others with humility simply because that is the character of the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit that seeks to dwell within and through us. Ask God to help you selflessly serve others today for Christ’s sake, not your own.
