Ephesians 2:11-22
During Paul’s time, Gentiles were restricted to the outer court of the Temple. They could gather into this area but no farther. King Herold permitted the Jewish authorities to punish any offenders. Even a Roman citizen could be put to death for breaking this law. Paul himself was accused of bringing a Gentile into the Temple (Acts 21). This resulted in an angry mob scene and his arrest.
I doubt that we can overestimate the divide between the Jews and the Gentiles prior to the first century. There was a wide, and deep gulf between them. They viewed each other with utter contempt. The term “wall of hostility” was not an exaggeration.
Jesus was sent to destroy this barrier; He was to be the peace that would turn these two groups into one. If Jesus could do this, what impossible barrier exists in your life that needs destroying? Whatever it is, by working together with God, it can be destroyed and replaced with peace.
